thank you! yes, they brought me coffee and juice each morning at a time i'd tell them the night before--i'd wake up and it would be at my door, along with two newspapers and a rose...it was rather delightful.
it's funny that you mentioned the ritz in DC, because this hotel was also in DC--it's the Omni Shoreham. i was there this week and was very impressed with the service touches. it did operate on that swiss level. i guess that's why a lot of inaugural balls (like clinton's) have been held there. apparently it was also truman's "secret" place to stay when he wanted to "get away" from it all.
yeah, it's incredible, isn't it? great hotels are their own delightful worlds!!!
if you've never been, you should check out the biltmore in santa barbara sometime. i loved to go there for high tea in the afternoon when i was stressed out, or sunday brunch, or dinner. we went there once for easter dinner and it was wonderful! when i got my phd, my mother and i went there for dinner after the ceremonies, and they gave us this special alcove with a stunning view over butterfly beach. i used to go there to...um...."party" in a room a "friend" of mine had semi-permanently, back when i was young and rather reckless it's a wonderful getaway hotel.
I've never stayed at the Biltmore but it sounds awesome. I will keep that in mind. We do take some trips locally sometimes that are such get-aways. My son and his wife just stayed at the Wrigley Mansion on Catalina and said it was like heaven!
currently, because I travel cross country with my dog.. I've had to stay in places somewhere down the food chain from the Ritz or Biltmore.
